This animation uses a Jupiter image map wrapped around a suitably sized ellipsoid. Amalthea uses Phil Stooke's shape model. The red colouration and general albedo features have been modelled on photographs - in particular, the bright inner surface of Gaea (the south pole crater) and the paler areas around the subJovian and antiJovian points. The slight surface sheen and veined appearance are products of the animator's imagination - both to suggest an icy surface, and to delineate the surface features a little more clearly. |
